Soakaways

A soakaway is an underground drainage system that helps with on-site surface water management by absorbing it into the ground instead of discharging it elsewhere, like a natural waterway or sewer. To create a soakaway, you have to excavate part of the ground and remove what’s there. Then, you replace it with a concrete ring, fabric membrane, or plastic crate system.

 

The storage area is typically made of stone and wreckage, which causes the water to seep through and eliminates more pollutants before it’s filtered into the ground in a deliberate way. Geo-cellular crates can also be used as an alternative, which provides additional storage space but not as much filtration for surface water runoff.
